What Happened to the Inventors? https://kylegill.com/essays/what-happened-to-the-inventors (HN source)
"What happened to the inventors?" essay by Kyle Gill is a great read, thank you! I was also thinking about the influence and effect of law and how this can collide with radical progress. Brain-machine interfaces, self-driving cars, for example, require a lot of approval because of the dangers these technologies could pose if unregulated.
On another note, I wonder if inventors have disappeared at all or if they are all around us. There are so many people (like me) who learn from YouTube and other free resources on the Internet. I also follow some incredible DIY roboticists, makers, rocket scientists--- "inventors", who demonstrate unbelievable skills in the arts and engineering.
It seems more like the invention has become so common and accessible in media that it's more like the way society perceives the role of the inventor has changed. Perhaps capitalism and social media have pushed us to consider successful entrepreneurs as more deserving of this kind of high-level, architect persona-- like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk or Bill Gates?
